Abstract
Eosinophilic pleural effusions (EPE) are defined by an eosinophil count of ≥10% in the pleural fluid and make up approximately 10% of exudative pleural effusions. The potential underlying etiology of the EPEs is extensive, and its presence is not disease specific. The percentage of eosinophil count may have clinical value, with the presence of a very high eosinophil count in pleural fluid representing a negative predictor of malignancy. The diagnostic work-up should be same as for other exudative effusion on unknown etiology and should include pleural biopsy in indeterminate causes.
