Abstract

Aim:
Patients with neurological disorders may encounter different forms of violence throughout their lives. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common neurological condition, but despite abundant literature on the physical, cognitive, and psychological impacts on people living with MS, there have been limited studies on their violence-related experiences. This study presents a scoping review of the existing literature on this topic, aiming to identify knowledge gaps, and explore future research directions.

Method:
This scoping review followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to 10th May 2024 using search terms: (multiple sclerosis) AND (violence OR violent OR hostile OR hostility OR homicide OR oppression OR abuse OR abused). We included relevant English-language studies that examined violent experiences among individuals with MS. Data on study design, population characteristics, and outcomes were extracted.

Results:
Among 868 retrieved studies, seven studies met the study’s eligibility criteria: approximately 80% of individuals included were women and various types of violence were reported: physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, and financial. Neglect, harassment, and intimidation were other reported types of violence experienced by people with MS. Violence was committed by a range of individuals, including strangers, employers, caregivers, family members, and partners.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, people living with MS are vulnerable to various forms of violence. This review highlights the need for strategies to screen, intervene, and support people who have experienced violence due to their MS diagnosis.
