Abstract
The introduction of a 2-D periodic array of holes adjacent to the ridge waveguide of an F-P laser was used to create single-contact, single-longitudinal-mode lasers. A detailed experimental characterization of etched devices was carried out and modeling was undertaken to determine the effects of the etched grating. The single-mode nature of the device was shown to be due to the overlap of the evanescent mode with the etched grating.
