Abstract

Undertaking a ward round independently is not a common teaching topic yet is often required of Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctors from day one.
A new ward round checklist was introduced in small-group simulation-based teaching sessions during FY1 induction using three common ward round scenarios. The checklist was then disseminated for use by all trainees on medical wards.1
FY1’s self-rated confidence was assessed before and after teaching. Confidence in documentation increased from 7 to 8/10. Confidence in leading an independent ward round increased from 4 to 7/10. FY1s found the session ‘useful’ and ‘engaging’, rating it on average 4.8/5 stars.2
We have shown that a ward round checklist and simulation are effective for teaching new doctors ward round skills. Sessions will be repeated for future junior doctor inductions and medical student programmes.
