From "Wages for Housework" to Basic Income: A Discourse in Autonomist Feminism

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference Contribution (Conference Proceeding)

Abstract

Recent years have seen an increased interest in the “wages for housework” movement that emerged from 1970s autonomist feminism. Within the UBI discourse, this demand is seen as somewhat of a precursor movement, and as such has been drawn upon - most notably by Weeks (2011) - when discussing current UBI advocacy. Delving into the intellectual history of this theoretical current, this chapter traces the development of autonomist feminism and its transition away from a wages for housework position towards support for a basic income. Following the underlying analyses and assumptions of this discourse, I examine the areas in which UBI represents both a continuation of and an improvement upon previous demands, while ultimately expressing critical support for UBI and autonomist feminism more generally on these grounds.
