Abstract

This chapter offers an overview and guidance on diplomas for medical students based in the United Kingdom. Diplomas usually come as two components: the course and the exam. A diploma can serve as a great opportunity for medical students and doctors to broaden their professional knowledge, experience and networks without the cost and time requirements of undertaking a full degree. One way to enhance medical students’ time at medical school is to undertake an additional year of study that culminates in the award of a bachelor’s degree or in some cases a master’s degree. A PhD in medicine will be able to quench medical students’ thirst for knowledge underlying the whys and hows of disease pathophysiology, with the potential for translation into novel therapies. A Master of Public Health is a specialist multidisciplinary programme aimed at postgraduates, focussed on improving the health of communities and populations.
