Abstract

This chapter focuses on life on glacier surface, in the supraglacial environment. It examines the types of ecosystems that exist on glacier surfaces worldwide, and the key differences between these habitat types in different climatic zone. The chapter also discusses the dominant species found in glacial surface ecosystems, and explains the biogeochemical processes that prevail on glacier surfaces as a result of this microbial activity. Finally, the potential impacts of the microbial processes in glacier surface ecological niches on the surrounding environment and on ecosystems that are fed by glacier melt, are also presented.
