Abstract
The essay argues that the reputation of Pope's January and May fails to recognise the poetic excellence of this example of Pope's early work, and that this is symptomatic of a more general underestimation of his earliest years. The essay draws analogies between Queen Anne's role as a female monarch and the roles of women in Chaucer's poem.
