Abstract
This article compares memory conflicts linked to World War One across three countries: Italy, Great Britain and Ireland. Through a detailed stud of public memories linked to the war (plaques, celebrations, monuments, silences) the article looks at the ways that World War One in these three countries create division and conflict. It also examines the changing forms of these memories over time, and tht ways that certain 'forgotten' aspects of the war (such as soldiers executed for 'crimes' such as 'cowardice') have become included in official memories over time.
