Abstract

Hans Lyklema was a true internationalist! He visited and had numerous friends in many countries. He also welcomed scientists from all around the world to visit or work in his laboratory in Wageningen. He spoke several languages in addition to Dutch (and indeed his native, Frisian!): English, German, French and Russian. Moreover, he always tried to deliver a talk (or at least begin his talk) in the language of the country he was visiting. The only place I personally know he was “defeated” in this regard was when he gave a talk at the University of Aberystwyth in Wales – I was there – Welsh was a tongue too far!
