Abstract
The chapter reflects upon the history and development of higher education in the island states of Oceania, while documenting the nature, achievements and challenges of changing contemporary provision. Particular attention is given to an interrogation of the influence of international agendas on developments within the sector; an analysis of research and pedagogic priorities articulated within the region; an awareness of enduring socio-political tensions; and an exploration of related environmental, cultural and epistemological implications for the higher education sector. In doing so, the chapter draws upon the potential of combined insider-outsider positionings grounded in respect for context sensitivity and Oceanic cultures and values.
