Abstract

This article investigates the accessibility of education publications authored by researchers based in sub-Saharan Africa, with respect to Open Access status and their availability within the region. We draw on bibliometric analysis of 1858 peer-reviewed articles published in English in international journals over the nine-year period 2010-2018, together with interviews with 31 academics based in the region. Patterns and trends in Open Access publishing are explored alongside factors associated with this, such as funding, international collaboration and journal impact factors. Overall we find a steady increase in Open Access publishing over this period, and identify persistent issues affecting the accessibility of research for academics within the region.
