'In aventure there mervayles meven': Pearl and the Otherworlds of French Arthurian Romance

Research output: Working paper

Abstract

This upcoming paper will explore the Pearl-poet's engagement with the otherworldly conventions of French Arthurian romance as a means of intentionally destabilising both the narrator's and the reader's ability to make sense of the otherworldly landscapes that feature within this Middle English religious dream vision. In particular, this paper argues that the techniques the Pearl-poet uses to generate this sense of ambiguity about the nature of the otherworldly space share very clear parallels with examples found in the works of Chrétien de Troyes, including in Erec et Enide and Le Conte du Graal.
