As editor Brown developed the methodology, did all of the reflection on and analysis of the historiography, commissioned all of the essays, made substantial editorial changes throughout, and implemented additionals and recommendations on all of them. Brown shaped the essays into a coherent volume with reference to his own Introduction to the volume. Brown co-wrote Andrew Thompson's Afterword, which reflects on the themes developed in the book, although it was published with Thompson named as the sole author. The intellectual ownership of the conception and design of this volume lies with the editor.
