Abstract
Recent scholarship has adopted diametrically opposed positions with regard to the significance of the polis in Sophocles' Electra. This article argues that neither scholarly extreme is tenable, and attempts a more nuanced analysis of the question, paying close attention to the prominent placing of references to the polis in the play.
