Abstract

The essay charts the parallel journeys made by German Expressionist painter Paula Modersohn Becker (1876-1907) from Worpswede to Paris in 1900-1901 and the journeys made by British painter Chantal Joffe and myself with our daughters from the UK to Worpswede on the trail of Paula Modersohn Becker whose work still exerts influences on Chantal's. The trip was funded by The Lowry as part of Michael Simpson's commission of an exhibition of Chantal's work at The Lowry, co-curated by the three of us. The exhibition runs from 19 May - 2 September 2018
