Abstract

We know a lot of information about the processions of the Roman liturgy. However, the Hispanic rite processions held in most of Christian Iberia before ca. 1080 have hardly been studied. The manuscripts of the Hispanic liturgy preserve rubrics that explicitly show the characteristics and context of such processions. These took place before, during or after Mass (e.g. on Palm Sunday), at the end of the evening or morning service (e.g. at the consecration of a basilica), or even outside the daily routine of the liturgy (e.g. on votive occasions). In this article we collect all the rubrics that are transmitted in the manuscripts of the Hispanic rite and that inform about the liturgical movement. Some of these rubrics refer unequivocally to processions, while others describe ceremonies that might well be described, more informally, as "liturgy in motion." In particular, we have focused on those processional rubrics, although we have also paid attention to other movements as part of the liturgy. In addition, in this article we identify the genres of song associated with processions and define the processional practices that attest to these rubrics.
