Low Carbon Fuels Strategy - Department for Transport Consultation Response

Research output: Other contribution

Abstract

We propose that by considering “Low Carbon” in isolation as an output emission from transportation, emissions from all sectors will be misunderstood and underestimated.

We have used the Aerospace sector as an example of the considerations required to take a more holistic view of the impact of emissions from a range of greenhouse gases and related contaminants. Thus, we have considered the effect of not only Carbon but also Nitrogen Oxides, Methane, Water vapour and Particulate Matters.

Thus, our proposals are two-fold:

1.We propose that consideration is given to both effective radiative forcing and persistency to assess the impact of each emission; and
2.Suggestions for operational mitigations drawn from the aerospace sector which could be applied to other modes of transport.

The overriding conclusion is that “simple” deployment of Low Carbon Fuels is necessary but insufficient to address the UK’s climate goals relating to transport.
