Abstract

‘Hegemonic masculinity is the culturally idealised form of masculinity in a given historical and social setting. It is culturally honoured, glorified, and extolled situationally—such as at the broader societal level (e.g., through the mass media) and at the institutional level (e.g., in school)—and is constructed in relation to ‘subordinated masculinities’ (e.g., homosexuality) and in relation to women.’ (Messerschmidt 2005, p. 4)
