Measurement, Interpretation and Application of R-Curves for Translaminar Fracture Toughness of Composite Laminates

Abstract

The reasons for the large variation of reported values of translaminar fracture toughness are considered, both for initiation and propagation. The effects of ply thickness, layup, the development of the fracture process zone and the implications for predicting response of notched structures are discussed.
