Mediclip: Preventing Drug Interactions when Self-Medicating using Tangible Medicine Boxes

Abstract

We present an open-source tangible system using capacitive clips to help users self-manage medication outside of clinical settings. The system consists of stackable passive capacitive tangibles that can be clipped onto medicine boxes. When the clips are placed onto a display, meaningful information is displayed, including drug interactions between medicines. We first interviewed end-users to better understand self-medication practices and inform the design of our solution. We present the design of our system in a four clips proof-of-concept prototype combined with two visualizations modes (small and large) displaying medicine information on the touchscreen We evaluate our system via a controlled experience showing that our system is efficient to communicate drug interactions. We finish with a discussion informed by additional feedback from end-users to whom we showed Mediclip.
