Middle English Biblical Poetry: Romance, Audience and Tradition

Research output: Book/ReportAuthored book

Abstract

5-chapter monograph on 13th- and 14th-century English poems that retell stories from the Old Testament, including 'Cleanness', 'Patience', 'Susanna', Jacob and Joseph' and two lives of Adam and Eve. Book offers an explanation of the cultural function of these neglected poems. Analyses how these poems adapt the Bible and incorporate other influences; places poems in relation to wider religious and literary cultures, especially contemporary English romance; considers reading contexts, political agenda and literary status of the poems.
