Abstract
The passive mode-locking properties of large, monolithic semiconductor ring lasers have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. By using a computer simulation based on the traveling-wave model, the operating conditions under which mode locking may be achieved have been determined. Three different configurations of intracavity saturable absorber have been used, and the dual-absorber arrangement shown to be superior in having greater range of operation and shorter pulse width. Experimental confirmation of mode-locked operation has been obtained
