Abstract
An image analysis system has been developed, capable of determining the size and locations of bubbles or "voids" in a planar gas-fluidised bed. From this the bubble voidage fraction of the bed (the fraction occupied by bubbles) is calculated. Transfer functions relating this to the gas flow rate into the bed are developed theoretically and show good agreement with those obtained from experiments on the bed. PID and adaptive controllers are then implemented, enabling the bubble voidage fraction to be successfully controlled.
