Abstract

Among 55 children with culture-positive acute otitis media with spontaneous otorrhea, 28 (51%) cultured aural Streptococcus pneumoniae in whom in 10, two distinct strains were detected, 5 pairs of which were both capsule-bearing serotypes. Such cases were more likely to culture other otopathogens than those with only one pneumococcus present.
