Abstract

An analytical method is implemented for the effective period and damping of pile-supported bridge piers founded on multi-layered soil. A dynamic Winkler model is utilized to represent the soil-pile interaction in the analysis of bridge pier response. The typical case of a pier on a 4 x 4 closely-spaced group of piles is parametrically investigated and dimensionless charts for period and damping are thereby developed. These results can be readily utilized in preliminary seismic design of bridges. Moreover, valuable conclusions are concisely drawn regarding on the roles of pile-to-pile interplay and radiation damping.
