Abstract
Guided wave testing is an effective and safe method for non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques and applications of structural health monitoring (SHM) of engineering structures, such as pipeline. For pipeline inspections, it is located on the pipe circumference using a circumferential array of piezoelectric transducers. Commonly, the sensitivity of operation, which is 3%–9% of cross-sectional area reduction, depending on the signal-to-noise ratio. This paper presents research on the characterisation of circumferential array design using finite element analysis (FEA) with an odd transducer spacing. Numerical models by linear superposition analysis (LSA) and the related experimental validation have been combined. An excitation signal of torsional wave mode T(0, 1) with flexural wave modes to propagate on a pipe has been simulated by the LSA method. Array design optimisation will lead to improvement in non-destructive evaluation of pipe defects using guided waves.
