Partial Histories: A Reappraisal of Colley Cibber

Research output: Book/ReportAuthored book

This book offers a radical new interpretation of the life and career of the actor-manager-playwright Colley Cibber. I argue that the partial histories we have inherited, in which Cibber is represented as the king of the dunces, a professional fop, a defacer of Shakespeare and a cruel tyrant, are both biased and incomplete, serving to reinforce a version of history ‘everybody knows’ and shore up disciplinary narratives. This book returns the most successful theatrical writer, actor and impresario of the century to his rightful place at the centre of cultural studies
