Abstract

The article analyses the way medieval individuals participated in religious devotion. In particular it examines Good Friday preaching and rituals which captured a high dramatic moment of emotional involvement in one's religion. To demonstrate these points, the article focuses on Elizabeth of Spalbeek; Margarita of Cortona; Gertrude van der Oosten; and Ladislaus of Gielnow.
