Placing Spaces: a site-specific AR installation

Research output: Non-textual formPerformance

Abstract

Can you tell me a little bit about where we are?
What can you see?
What’s your favourite thing to do here?
What memories do you have of this place?

In 2023 we moved from the northeast of Scotland to the southwest of England. To reflect on this life-changing transition, I asked my 6-year-old daughter to take me to her favourite places in Dundee, where we lived. I asked her about how these places made her feel, what they made her think of and significant memories she attached to them. I documented our conversations through audio recordings and 3D scans of these sites.

At TaPRA conference 2023 at the University of Leeds, I used these documents to install a series of geo-located augmented reality encounters at various locations around the outdoor spaces between conference venues. A treasure hunt, a site-specific performance for one, an unreliable oral history, Placing Spaces employed AR technologies to explore transitions and the layering of space, belonging and memory through the lens of one father-daughter relationship.
