Abstract

The RCGP have recently published guidance outlining how a GP might formally develop an extended role in population health and health inequalities (RCGP, 2024). This short article, written by two current GP registrars with their own interest in population and public health, describes how you might start to develop an interest and how to go about getting experience during your GP training.
Declan is an academic GP registrar and is currently out-of-programme on the National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow Scheme, where he is based with the public health team at NHS England.
Mavin is an academic GP registrar and is undertaking a public health scholarship within a Local Authority alongside his academic training.
