Abstract
The campaign for the independence of Catalonia is founded on a single principle: as a result of its history, its culture, its language, and its contemporary political-economic context, the “Catalan nation” has the right to self-determination and should exercise it by separating from Spain and establishing an independent and democratic state within the EU. However, it is difficult to make a convincing case for an independence referendum, let alone a “yes” vote if it is to take place.
