Abstract
Professions face numerous threats including from automation, the Internet, charges of elitism, social media and recent populist rhetoric denigrating experts and evidence based information. Responses by professional bodies to these challenges are surveyed and numerous case studies are provided. However it is argued that these responses are sporadic and uncoordinated. Recommendations for better promoting of professionalism are provided.
