Abstract

Focusing on revivals of four plays written by early modern women theatermakers—Aphra Behn’s The Lucky Chance, Elizabeth Cary’s The Tragedy of Mariam, Fair Queen of Jewry, Margaret Cavendish’s The Unnatural Tragedy, and Mary Wroth’s Love’s Victory—this entry explores theater direction as embodied criticism, as activism, and the significance of context, site, and status in creating meaning, and also argues that the insights generated by revivals need to be attended to when engaging seriously and deeply with the dramatic texts created by early modern women theatermakers.
