Abstract
This chapter examines EU regulation of contracts for the sale of consumer goods. It will identify the changes introduced by the 2019 Sale of Goods Directive (Directive 2019/771/EU), noting its key characteristics and policy objectives and why the decision was taken to amend the earlier Consumer Sales Directive 1999/44/EC. This chapter will also analyse recent amendments to the 2019 Directive by the Repair of Goods Directive (EU) 2024/1799 which implements the European Commission’s Green Deal and promotes its goal of encouraging sustainable consumption.
