Abstract

For over 15 years, ICT within music teacher education has been a key focus for me in my role as lead tutor of the one year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programme at the University of Bristol, England. Furthermore, as a member of the European Association for Music in Schools (EAS), work with music teacher and teacher education colleagues from many countries has offered me insight into varying approaches to music teacher education across Europe, and the place of technology within these. This chapter will consider pre-service teacher education in England and across Europe. It will present thoughts about my own work within initial teacher education in England, and also draw upon:
• my empirical research on English student teachers’ and school mentors’ perceptions of technology within teacher education courses, and
• the reflections of student teachers and music educators from across Europe, as presented within the two EAS-supported publications NET MUSIC Project 01: New Technology in the Field of Education (2009) and European Perspectives on Music Education: New media in the classroom (2012).
