Abstract
Digital technologies, devices and data are woven into the fabric of contemporary societies: the digital and the social are co-evolving in a ‘sociodigital’ world. This raises significant and pressing questions about sociodigital futures: how these are made and what might be done to intervene in them. Sociology is well-placed and – at the same time – faces significant challenges in addressing these questions . This paper explores both the challenges and potential contributions that Sociology can – and should – make to this debate and, beyond debate, to making sociodigital futures. We draw together a range of theories from Science and Technology Studies, the Philosophy of Knowledge and Social Practice Theory to sketch a theoretical framing and research agenda for investigating sociodigital phenomena. In turn, we consider how this might be harnessed to practical engagement with sociodigital futures in-the-making.
