String Quartet #3: 'Fiddlin'

Research output: Non-textual formComposition

Abstract

String Quartet # 3, commissioned by Nova Chamber Music Series, Arizona Friends of Chamber Music and composed for the Fry Street Quartet, uses 'fiddle' riffs in a series of fragmented, short movements, to build up a structure both terse in structure and exploratory in terms of string technique. In addressing problems related to metaphors between 'abstraction' and the 'figurative' (or 'vernacular') in music, the piece draws on the inspiration of cubism (especially Braque) in creating a feeling of lively multidimensionality and perspective, producing a result that may seem almost abstract much of the time, while being based on the most concrete of subjects.
