Structure and temperature dependence of fatty acid Langmuir-Blodgett films studied by neutron and X-ray scattering

    Abstract

    Structural studies of docosanoic acid Langmuir-Blodgett films and the fatty acid salts with cadmium have been performed using X-ray and neutron diffraction. The room temperature structure of the multilayers and their temperature evolution depend strongly on the pH of the original subphase, in keeping with X-ray reflectivity measurements of the monolayer-cation binding coefficients. The effect of substrate preparation is studied, and preliminary results of the effect of multilayer aging and of dipping speed are presented.
