Abstract

The Body of the Combatant in the Ancient Mediterranean is an interdisciplinary volume which explores perceptions, receptions and constructions of the soldierly body in the Ancient Mediterranean, across ten chapters responding to the same question: ‘How was war embodied in the ancient world?’ Ten case studies explore the senses, visuals and embodiment of combat across wide-ranging time periods, texts and materials, from Ancient History and beyond, demonstrating the universally fundamental role played by the body in war.
