Abstract
Leadership is an important element of political culture in south India. This chapter investigates ways in which political leaders in the state of Tamil Nadu seek support for their political parties and build constituencies. Leadership is exercised in a widely understood and accepted style of populist politics that has been practiced in Tamil Nadu since the 1970s. The recent activity of the actor-politician Vijayakanth is analysed in this context.
