A detailed examination of the presentation of the noble Saracens, Saladin and his brother Saphadin, in Ambroise’s rhymed chronicle, showing how the perception of Saladin that was popular in the crusading army was manipulated by the chronicler. Both Saracens are shown as worthy opponents of Richard I but not on a par with him
