Abstract

The book achieves the following objectives: explains what evaluation is and how it is related to research and audit; outlines the scope for evaluation in maternity care; reviews the thinking and practical tasks required before commencing an evaluation; provides a basic guide to the range of research methods, techniques and standard instruments that can be used; outlines the ways in which existing health service information systems and routine data sources can be used to support evaluations; provides specific guidance on economic appraisal; and details how to evaluate maternity services for women with special needs. Jo Garcia has a Master's Degree in Medical Demography from London University. She was one of the editors of "The Politics of Maternity Care" published in 1990. Rona Campbell is a social scientist whose major research interest has been the evaluation of maternity care services. She is perhaps best known for an analysis of the debate and evidence on place of birth entitled "Where to be born", written with Alison Macfarlane.
