The Rhetoric of Inquiry in International Relations: A Hermeneutic Investigation into the Forms of Argumentation in IR Meta-theory

Research output: Book/ReportAuthored book

Abstract

The book explores the various rhetorical dimensions implicit in the development of meta-theoretical frameworks in International Relations. It argues that current meta-theoretical practice has widely neglected the importance of diverging forms of argumentation in the defence of the substantive claims advanced in different meta-theoretical positions. Using an interpretive framework derived from the hermeneutic work of Hans-Georg Gadamer, it explores the central role of rhetoric in the construction of meta-theoretical arguments. Identifying meta-theorising as a deliberative practice, it breaks new ground by providing a rhetoric of inquiry to demonstrate the intricate relationship between form and content in meta-theorising. On this basis it opens new paths for engagement between meta-theoretical positions often seen as irreconcilable. Taking the relation between form and content seriously, this book proposes an ethos of conversation to guide discussions in meta-theoretical debates in International Relations.
