The Role of Women in Stimulating New Types of Sustainable Value Creation

Abstract

The global financial crisis resulted in high levels of unemployment (especially amongst young people), businesses failures, gender inequality and
social unrest. These problems arose in varying degrees throughout Europe.
Greece was notably badly affected. In this chapter, we explore the experience
of Greece in the aftermath of the Eurozone crisis as a lens through which
to view the problems women encountered, particularly in southern Europe,
but also in different ways in other parts of Europe. While it is clear that some
corporate practices, including a focus on unsustainable and short-term value
creation, were implicated in the financial crisis, it is also clear that business
has an important role to play in solving these issues.
We consider how companies might work towards the creation of sustainable value. We also reflect on current European trends for regulating and
managing corporations, and the significance this has for corporations’ legal
status and their operations, as well as for corporations’ behaviour towards society and the world.
