Abstract
In October 2013, the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) made a formal policy commitment to a framework for responsible innovation. I describe the development of this framework over a four-year period since 2009 and key inputs which shaped its evolution and framing. I conclude with some thoughts about future directions, as EPSRC itself transitions from understanding what RI means, to how it could be meaningfully implemented.
