Abstract

Tutorials play a crucial role in the teaching and learning experience for undergraduate students offering students a valuable opportunity to engage in regular, small-group learning. In response to increased student numbers and staff workload, postgraduate students were recruited and trained to lead first-year undergraduate tutorials focused on debate and discussion skills. Survey results demonstrate that postgraduate tutors develop valuable teaching and leadership skills, undergraduates appreciate the approachability and relatability of postgraduate tutors, and staff experience a reduced workload. Undergraduates also recognised the tutorials importance in developing academic and transferable skills. This innovative approach provides a model for leveraging postgraduate students to enrich undergraduate education while addressing staff workload challenges.
