Abstract
Reinterprets Kipling’s first years of publication as a poet, substantially revising our understanding of the Indian newspapers he published in (in terms of readership -- numbers and geographical spread). Argues for the importance of this period in Kipling's writing to Kipling’s understanding of the newspaper as a literary medium.
