Abstract

This 27,000-word working paper explains how estimates of the tonnage of goods imported and exported at Bristol in three years during the late fifteenth century were arrived at. These estimates underpin the analysis in: Evan T. Jones, ‘The shipping industry of the Severn Sea’ in E. T. Jones and R. Stone (eds.), The World of the Newport Medieval Ship: trade, politics and shipping in the mid-fifteenth century (University of Wales Press, forthcoming).
