Abstract

Visa and passport inequities are a key barrier to research partnerships with Global South (GS). This toolkit aims to promote visa and passport equity, including the findings that informed its development. A survey (n=75) and interviews (n=12) were conducted to inform its development.

The majority in the survey reported experiencing or observing visa and passport inequity. Reported impacts ranged from a reduced contribution from GS partners on research projects to anxiety, shame and stigma associated with visa applications and outcomes. Study participants provided institutional and government-level recommendations to reduce the impact of visa and passport inequity.

Based on the findings and recommendations, the toolkit identified six considerations for promoting visa and passport equity: 1) inclusive, fair, and equitable research partnerships; 2) budgeting for all visa application costs; 3) facilitating documentation to support application; 4) timeliness; 5) communicating effectively; and 6) exploring buffers and alternatives. These considerations are discussed in detail in the toolkit.
